Eastford Historical Society

Did you know that Eastford opened its first public dump in the 1930s?

Until then, most rubbish a family generated could be used as mulch or compost, but the age of canned and pre-packaged food was dawning, and with it, the problem of rubbish disposal. An ordinance was passed prohibiting roadside dumping, and a committee formed to locate a site for a public dump. Land was rented from Orlo Carpenter for public dumping for $10 per year until 1939, when the town purchased it for $250 from First Selectman Lewin Newth. Years later, another committee formed to bring the “Dump” into the 21st century, and in 1991 the Eastford Transfer Station was established.

The Historical Society seeks community support to continue its mission of collecting, preserving, and sharing documents and artifacts that tell Eastford’s unique history. Kindly consider supporting our mission by becoming a member or renewing your membership. We would greatly appreciate volunteer and/or financial support. Donations may be mailed to: EHS, P.O.
