Bulldogs begin fall soccer schedule with mixed results

EASTFORD — The Eastford Bulldogs’ fall soccer season began last month, and this year the school has two teams to cheer for, fielding both a boys’ and a girls’ team for the first time in several years.

Kullen Pacheco is head coach of the boys’ team, while Jen Barlow is head coach of the girls’ squad. Both teams are now in the midst of a 12-game schedule in the Quinebaug Valley Junior Conference (QVJC) Small School division, which this year consists of the following six opponents: Parish Hill, Canterbury, Thompson, Pomfret, Ashford, and St. James. The top four teams at the end of the regular season will play a two-round playoff (Semifinals and Finals) to determine the QVJC Champion. Playoff schedules will be announced near the end of the regular season.

The boys’ team started the season 2-0, with a 2-1 victory over St. James on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 15, and then a shutout, 2-0 victory over Parish Hill at home on Thursday, Sept. 17. Kameron Pacheco scored three times in the first two games, once against St. James, and twice against Parish Hill. Jack Kernan added a goal against St. James.

The Bulldogs would falter in the next two games, however, as they lost at home to Canterbury, 4-1, on Tuesday, Sept. 22, and then were shut out, 8-0, on the road at Thompson on Thursday, Sept. 24. Charlie Ellsworth added his first goal of the season against Canterbury.

As of press time Monday, Sept. 28, the boys’ team is 2-2 (1-1 home, 1-1 away) with eight games left on the schedule.

On the girls’ side, the Bulldogs have struggled offensively, losing 6-0 at home to St. James on Tuesday, Sept. 15, then narrowly losing to Parish Hill, 2-1, on the road to Parish Hill on Thursday, Sept. 17, with the lone goal of the season thus far being scored by Hayleigh Wooding. On Tuesday, Sept. 22, the girls were shut out 9-0 on the road at Canterbury, moving to 0-3 on the season (0-1 home, 0-2 away) as of press time.
